Award-Winning Artwork

First-Place:
Susan Check Virgina Beach, Virgina Kent Highlights $950 This painting appealed to both Tom Baldwin and me, because Ms. Check displayed a strong ability to imbue a variety of color within the local colors of the landscape. Her virtuosity in brush handling and color sense is superb in this painting. It culminates in capturing the fleeting effects of sunlight on a variety of surfaces-water, land, and foliage. — Dino Massaroni |
Second-Place:
Helen Gilmore Painesville, OH Betty Not For Sale Ms. Gilmore has portrayed the woman in this painting with enviable sensitivity. There are enough details to describe the subject with accuracy without going overboard. The restrained color scheme makes this painting easy to behold. — Dino Massaroni |
Third-Place:
Silvia Heller Bedford, OH March on Washington $2,000 Depicting the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. and all that a powerful event such as this represents is no small feat. Ms. Heller has done an outstanding job. There is a sense of physical depth with the layering of figures and signs, but there is also powerful emotional depth by the elements this artist has chosen to include in the composition as well as what she has chosen to leave out. The varied emotions of the women (and some men) capture a broad range of mood. The use of cool and warm colors further broadens the mood. — Dino Massaroni |
Honorable Mention:
Ann Ferguson Kah Macedonia, OH Saturday Sunshine $250 This painting embodies a wonderfully luminous atmosphere due to Ms. Kah’s skillful use of tonal values. The arrangement of shapes successfully holds the viewer’s attention within the composition. The artist has given the viewer enough information to allow them to enter the painting and wander the pathway, climb the boulders, and essentially explore the area for quite some time. — Dino Massaroni

Honorable Mention:
Donna Sedmock Akron, OH Composing at Midnight $175 Being an artist who works in a representational mode, I have a difficult time buying into abstract art. But this piece in attractive. It displays Ms. Sedmock’s strong design skills and somehow conveys a musical quality with its textural patterns and strong color scheme. — Dino Massaroni |
Honorable Mention:
Jeffrey Weiss Cuyahoga Falls, OH A Matter of Physics Not For Sale The whimsy in Mr. Weiss’ painting is consistent throughout. There is a believability regardless of the stylization of rendering. The color scheme suits the content beautifully. And the artist has provided us with many questions to ponder-much like The Master of Physics must have enjoyed. — Dino Massaroni |
Water Based Media |
First-Place:
Tom Mayer Mogadore, OH Engine 26 $500 There is a freshness in the handling of the medium in this painting. Mr. Mayer has decided on a color scheme that leans toward the warm tones and it works to convey a powerful pictorial design and mood. — Dino Massaroni |
Second-Place:
Ron Beahn Uniontown, OH Tribute to Barney Not For Sale A sensitive and skillfully executed painting that conveys the bond between human and pet that anyone who has shared that experience will relate to. The delicate play of light on the dog’s face holds our attention. — Dino Massaroni |
Third-Place:
Rick Surowicz Medina, OH Apple Baskets $185 The closely cropped composition sets this still life apart from others. While other still lives may resort to the tried and true arrangement of object within the rectangle of the canvas like actors on a stage, the objects in this painting are spontaneously arranged. There is a subtle depth of field which keeps the arrangement from seeming too flat. — Dino Massaroni |
Honorable Mention:
Kat LoGrande Streetsboro, OH Spiral $350 A powerful and strong design statement with much textural interest and a subdued color scheme. Quite appealing movement to the shapes as well. — Dino Massaroni |
Honorable Mention:

Honorable Mention:
Sandra Dennison Stow, OH Laying Down the Fly $650 Nicely designed. Simple rendering. Limited color scheme. All add up to a calm, peaceful mood. — Dino Massaroni |
