AWARDS by Category:

WATER BASED MEDIA

First-Place:
Kathy Sabbath Oravecz
City of Lights
“Exudes a beautiful mystical mood. It is deftly and tenderly painted. A quintessential watercolor.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Cathy Dully
The Promise
“Has a magical surrealistic quality that I just could not ignore. It is also beautifully painted.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Hal Scroggy
Travelers
“A strong graphic watercolor that benefits from its simplicity.”
– Linda Hutchinson

OIL BASED MEDIA

First-Place:
Phyllis Estis
Lamb of Love
“Is so very touching. It has a wonderful composition and utilizes both warm & cool neutrals which is not easy. The fur is convincing. I especially enjoyed the shared stroke between the two heads.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Janice T. Flipski
Wave Runner
“Terrific! Great movement and rhythm. Creative & energetic strokes. Excellent use of color. I also feel an implied sense of 3 dimensions.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Marie Steele
Winter Medina Co.
“Great mood! Balance of colds & warms is spot-on. Beautiful suggestive strokes.”
– Linda Hutchinson

DRY MEDIA

First-Place:
Noreen Molek
Blue Vase
“Is lush & lively and uses this medium to its best advantage… which to me, is full-blown pure color. Good ratio of color temperature as well. Nice use of space.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Noreen Molek
A Jar
“Is lush & lively and uses this medium to its best advantage… which to me, is full-blown pure color. Good ratio of color temperature as well. Nice use of space. Lovely use of many warm hues resulting in a marvelous “stained” quality.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Ann Emmitt
Yellow Tulips
“It’s beautiful simplicity comes from slightly flattened forms, pertinent rhythm, and interesting division of space.”
– Linda Hutchinson

MIXED MEDIA

First-Place:
Donna Cramer Sedmock
Above & Beyond
“Ancient maps contained information not available on maps today such as unknown and dangerous territories and monsters, directions of the wind and water currents. This mysterious ink drawing seems to provide information about a place. The water color indicates forces and alliances animating the region.”
– Linda Hutchinson
Honorable Mention:
Susan Mencini
Broken Redemption
“Small painting that creates and expansive and mysterious space. The suggestion of the figure is dynamic and lyrical at the same time.”
– Linda Hutchinson

3-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA

First-Place:
Tom Baldwin
Symiosis
“The carved wooden rhinoceros is the most ambitious of the 3-dimensional work. It uses the nature of the wood itself while also expressing the energy of the rhino and the companion bird. It was difficult not to touch the sculpture because it is so beautifully tactile.”
-Donna Webb
Honorable Mention:
Leo Miller
Glass & Brass
“This sculpture seems to have jumped off something like a Carousel or Merry-go-round. It suggests a whole world of magical flowers and carnivals. The power of the piece seems to lie in its ability to make one imagine something larger.”
– Donna Webb

Juror for Mixed Media & 3-Dimensional Media: DONNA WEBB

Donna Webb, tenured full professor at the M.S.A., since 1981, teaches ceramics and history of craft. Webb received her MFA degree from the University of Michigan in ceramics and drawing and has completed course work toward the MA in Ceramic History at Staffordshire University. She is a potter, sculptor and tile maker. She has created large scale mosaic tile installations and fountains — unique compositions of sculpture, tile, wood and water — in public sites since 1991. Her work in glaze formulation has resulted in mosaics in which color is used in a painterly way.

Webb was the recipient of an individual Artists Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council, honored as an Emerging Artist by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and received the Akron Area Arts Alliance Arts Alive! Outstanding Arts Educator Award. She is a founding member of Synapse Center for Art and Science as well as a member of the Color Line Project. Synapse promotes collaboration between artists and scientists. The Color Line Project uses storytelling about race, archives the stores and encourages the use of the stories in disciplines across campus.

She has exhibited and written about ceramics in venues locally, regionally and internationally including Kokoon Gallery, Harris Stanton Gallery and William Busta Gallery, Cleveland, Alexandre Hogue Gallery, Tulsa, OK., Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Arvada, CO, Ceramics Technical, Australia and Culture, Identity and Art in the Age of Globalization, Istanbul. Her work is published in The Art of Mosaic Design: A Collection of Contemporary Artists, by JoAnn Locktov, 1998, The Penland Book of Ceramics: Masters of Techniques, ed., by Deborah Morgenthal, 2000, Mosaic Style by JoAnn Locktov, 2004, Ceramics Technical, 2006, 500 Tiles by Angelica Pozo, 2007 and 500 Figures in Clay, vol. 2 by Nan Smith, 2014.
