Cuyahoga Valley Art Center 35th Annual Juried Exhibition
The Cuyahoga Valley Art Center Offered Artists the Opportunity to Participate in a Juried Exhibition in Seven Art Categories
The Cuyahoga Valley Art Center (CVAC), 2131 Front Street Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221, invited artists nationwide to enter CVAC’s 35th Annual Juried Exhibition, to be on display in their gallery from October 1st – November 2nd. Holding an annual juried exhibition has been a tradition at CVAC for 35 years now. This year they elevated the structure of this exhibition to the artists advantage.
“Our annual juried exhibition will be arranged by media in 7 different categories for submission: Watercolor Media, Water Based Media, Oil Based Media, Dry Media, Mixed Media, 3-Dimensional Media & Photographic Media.” tells Danielle Dieterich, Director of CVAC. “We offer a plethora of classes here at CVAC covering everything from watercolor, acrylic and oil painting to drawing, ceramics and woodcarving. We wanted to ensure that our categories highlight the different artistic medias that our art center specializes in.”
In previous years, the exhibition was not juried and only one first, second and third-place winner was selected. This juried exhibition will have 7 “Best of” Category winners, 7 People’s Choice individual category winners and up to 18 honorable mentions. The juror, Jack McWhorter, selected the winners for each category. A People’s Choice Selection process, started on October 2nd, dictated a People’s Choice Category winner for each category, which was announced at the end of the Artist Reception on October 19th.

Jurying the CVAC 35th Annual Juried Exhibition presented an opportunity to encounter an array of talent in varying media. The color story visible in the work selected speaks to the vitality of our urban, rural, and natural landscapes the artists sought to emulate. There was an overarching thoughtfulness and level of maturity evident in the body of work, and striking narratives within portraiture, object studies, and environment. Sculptural, assemblage, and mixed media selections are more whimsical, while the traditional media leans more heavily toward literal interpretation. While technical aptitude, provocative subject matter, and professional presentation were important criteria, the emotive qualities of the artwork and what they evoked spoke most prominently to me.
Winners:
| WATERCOLOR MEDIA: This category will include any media for which water, not oil nor polymers, are used as the binding agent, with the resulting artwork considered to be a watercolor. Mediums such as; watercolor paints, watercolor pencils, watercolor markers, and watercolor pastels are all included within this category, even if utilized together in one image. Acrylic and Tempera paints are not applicable within this category. | |
