Juror: C. Arthur Croyle

C. Arthur Croyle was raised in both Akron, Ohio, and in Dorfen, Germany where his grandparents lived. His German grandfather was an artist and designer and profoundly impacted Croyle’s career path. Croyle completed a BA and BFA with an emphasis in graphic design and illustration at the University of Akron and worked at an advertising agency, an art studio, and a publishing company before completing his MFA at Indiana University. He then began a 33-year career as a college faculty member, first at Miami University of Ohio, then at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. During his academic career, he transitioned from teaching graphic design and illustration in the fine arts where he taught painting and drawing. Croyle was the Director of the Biological and Pre-Medical Illustration Program at Iowa State and later served as Director of the Graduate Program in the Visual Arts and Culture Department. One of his career highlights was teaching four semesters in Rome and producing watercolors and drawing that recorded the beauty of the ‘Eternal City.’ His work in graphic design illustration, abstract and representational art has been exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally. Currently, in retirement, Croyle is the Vice President of the Akron Society of Artists and is concentrating his creative efforts on representing life and subject matter in the greater Akron area.

WATER-BASED MEDIA

BEST OF CATEGORY

RITA KOZAK TUROCY
North Royalton, OH

Riverview Chapel

Water Based Media

$200

“Painterly, atmospheric, and confident.  It’s an unconventional palette of subdued colors.  The specific place is hard to identify, but familiar as a timeless urban structure.  I enjoy the mark-making and strong compositional shapes.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

NATALIE HURYN
Cuyahoga Falls, OH

Self Anti-Portrait

Water Based Media

NFS

“A candid self-portrait of a young woman looking unflinchingly into the future.  There is an honesty in this unadorned, unsentimental self-portrait – freckles, moles, and all.  The medium handling and confident and sensitive.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

ROBERT PUTKA
Cuyahoga Falls, OH

In The Gazebo

Water Based Media

$1,800

“A celebration of nature and space.  Mr. Putka successfully conveys a place that anybody would enjoy being in.  The lively shadows across the patio floor are every bit as animated as the flowers and the leaf-laden branches.  As you look at this piece more, you appreciate the many nuances in the detail.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

WATERCOLOR MEDIA
BEST OF CATEGORY

BOB MAURER
Canton, OH

Main Street

Watercolor Media

NFS

“Main Street USA.  Maurer’s water-color depiction of the All-American residential block is handled with the confidence of a seasoned watercolorist.  He infuses this theme with character and charm.  We would all like this to be our neighborhood.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

SALLY HESTON
Broadview Heights, OH

Teapot, Pear, and Lace

Watercolor Media

$350

“The simple, beautiful still life references the classic still-lifes of the French Impressionists.  The forms in the painting have weight, character, and a lively silhouette line.  While the composition is simple, it is loaded with strong negative and positive shapes.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

TOM MAYER
Mogadore, OH

The Hired Man

Watercolor Media

$200

“It is exciting and rare for a water-colorist to lean into such high contrasts.  Mr. Mayer’s confidence and expertise with water-colors are on full display in this direct and simple piece.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIA

POLLOCK YOUNGPOLE
Akron, OH

Unlock this Door with Imagination

Photography

$200

“This piece harkens to the work of Jamie Odgers and April Greiman from the 1970’s.  There is a strong sci-fi vibe to this piece as well as a wonderful disorienting yet controlled composition.  The artist takes full advantage of all of the edges for composition’s sake.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

POLLOCK YOUNGPOLE
Akron, OH

Maiden Lane

Photography

$200

“Surprise.  Another standout work by Mr. Youngpole.  This playful approach to urban architecture is a celebration of details translated into vibrant colors and shapes.  The eye is manipulated with warm and cool color attributions.  It is an exciting piece that holds the viewers’ attention.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

WENDY HESS
Akron, OH

Byodo-In, Foggy Morning

Photography

$100

“This photo captures the beauty and breath-taking environment of this Japanese Temple.  The walkway in the foreground leads your eye right to the delicate architecture of the temple.  The background is shrouded in cloud and fog, adding to the atmosphere of the place.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

OIL-BASED MEDIA

BEST OF CATEGORY

TOM JACKSON
Stow, OH

Reaching Potential

Oil-Based Media

NFS

“Mr. Jackson’s painting of a building facade is his most preferred subject.  This time, however, he loads his composition with asymmetrical and conflicting forms.  He celebrates the jumble of urban signage and forms, however utilitarian they are, with the breaking of a new dawn.  Of particular note is how often Mr. Jackson uses shadows to finish his composition.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

MARK GIANGASPERO
Stow, OH

Alya

Oil Based Media

$1,200

“Mr. Giangaspero does not spare the details to spoil the child in this ultra-candid portrait of this pondering child.  His technique and mastery of his craft are on full display in the details of the face.  In the hair, Mr. Giangaspero becomes almost painterly and more playful.  I hope this child’s worries are resolved.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

MIXED MEDIA

BEST OF CATEGORY

MO MOSYJOWSKI
Akron, OH

Chance Combination

Mixed Media

$850

“Once again this abstract piece, divided into visual quadrants, becomes the artist’s playground for mark-making and expression.  The composition is loaded with a wide variety of marks and secondary colors, and even a written message that pulls the viewer deep into the piece.  It appears to be an automatic form of art which is informed by countless precursors that Ms. Mosyjowski has associated with.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

JAN DIERINGER
Fairview Park, OH

Kintsugi

Mixed Media

$450

“A sophisticated and encaustic work that beautifully integrates imagery and space to the point of mere abstraction.  The textures of the trees lend themselves perfectly to both the technique and artistic vision of the artist. The light breaking across the branches is a visual treat for the viewer.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

3-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA

BEST OF CATEGORY

LOU CAMERATO
Akron, OH

Totem #5 “Yin and Yang”

3-Dimensional Media

$400

“Mr. Camerato is displaying an increasing confidence in his constructions composed of found materials.  They are loaded with messages and thematically based.  This one in particular has a strong silhouette presence and alludes to a function.  There is also a playfulness in this work and a very subtle use of color throughout.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

LEO MILLER
Ravenna, OH

Home for Dinner

3-Dimensional Media

$300

“This playful bird form composed of found materials has a wonderful presence and a harmonizing color scheme.  Upon inspection, the feathers are made from numerous eating utensils and the gas tank body is both humorous and well-chosen.  It is both a funny and sophisticated piece rolled into one.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

DRY MEDIA

BEST OF CATEGORY

MARK GIANGASPERO
Stow, OH

Shelly

Dry Media

$2,800

“This is a work that is both easy to look past and hard to take your eyes off.  The many facial sectors are unified just enough to create one face but are, in fact, several.  Mr. Giangaspero again displays his abilities with this subject matter and medium, but in a completely different and visually unnerving way.  I would say it is fun, but the stare and expression are too intense.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle

HONORABLE MENTION

TRISH BLACKMAN
Hudson, OH

Autumn Leaves

Dry Media

$500

“A cohesive portrait with many textures and details that work in harmony.  The color choices of background to foreground help push this portrait out into the gallery space.  There is a delicate touch in handling in the face, and the soft edges throughout helps the figure integrate with the background.”

– Juror, C. Arthur Croyle
