BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE: Discover the expressive power of the “Alla Prima” technique in this immersive two-day oil painting workshop, designed for beginner to intermediate students eager to elevate their portrait skills. Alla Prima, an Italian term meaning “at once” or “at first attempt,” encourages artists to complete a painting in a single sitting, capturing the essence and likeness of their subject with immediacy and confidence.
Under the expert guidance of renowned artist Amy Gibson, participants will learn the essentials of portrait painting, including techniques for capturing an accurate facial likeness, mixing realistic skin tones, mastering value relationships, and creating a compelling emotive portrait. The instructor will kick off the workshop with a demonstration, sharing her process and tips, before working closely with each participant to provide tailored feedback and support.
Students can bring a photo reference to work from or one will be provided for them. A supply list will be provided with the required items needed for the workshops. Class size is limited.
Below are images provided by the instructor as examples of her Alla Prima Portraits:
Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Please pack your lunch for this workshop daily. If you cannot, there are local places where staff can recommend ordering boxed lunches. Students will need to pick up these lunches during their designated lunch.
