BEGINNING – ADVANCED: Embark on a creative journey with artist John Smolko in this dynamic two-day workshop, where scribbles take center stage as a powerful artistic tool. “Scribbling Into Art” reintroduces the innate joy of scribbling, inviting participants to explore the expressive potential of lines.
Scribbles are the first marks we accomplish effortlessly as children. Artist John Smolko reintroduces scribbling to the process of creating art as adults and challenges participants to experiment with unique mark-making techniques. Students who complete this challenging workshop will understand different Qualities of Line including the power of Expressive Line. This experience and knowledge will enable them to further explore the limitless possibilities of linear art on their own.

Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Please pack your lunch for this workshop daily. If you cannot, there are local places where staff can recommend ordering boxed lunches. Students will need to pick up these lunches during their designated lunch.

(Kent State University BFA, MFA) Artist John Smolko had a 35-year career in art education and the last 25 years of his teaching were at Aurora High School in Aurora, Ohio. All of John’s art can be traced to his teaching experiences and his scribble style of rendering is a direct result of that teaching. He retired from high school teaching in 2008 and immediately became a full-time artist who exhibits and offers Mark Making workshops all over the country. His unique scribble style is easily recognizable and he has exhibited locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. John is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and he participates in CPSA Conferences and International Shows. He is also a member of several CPSA District Chapters and John continues to share his skills and knowledge with his colleagues. Mr. Smolko also offers workshops for high school students, most being provided by the Cliffside Artists Collaborative in Hinckley, Ohio.
